Devastation in texas

The Devastation in Texas Was Irresponsible and Preventable

Texas Suffers from Winter storm

Winter Storms Devastate SE Texas

Lately when things go bad they seem to stay that way. In less than 1 year this country has been through the Pandemic, The worst financial Crisis of Our Lifetime,  BLM Riots, The 2020 Election, The Capitol Riots, and now bad things have happened  that absolutely nobody could have predicted or even dreamed of and they were once again man made problems.

The latest horrible event that has happened are the winter storms that have devastated the mostly tropical climate of SE Texas this week. These arctic winter storms left devastation across the state of Texas like a bad nightmare that we never thought would come true.  The Houston area and its suburbs (where we are located) were impacted hard and many people died. This storm devastated all of  SE Texas and sadly the after math is lingering.
As a  lifelong Texan and as a person that has traveled all over this country and experienced many different kinds of weather I would have bet my life on it that this kind of winter  weather would have “never” happened in SE Texas, but it did.

Texans saw temperatures and snow storms in a mostly tropical climate that they only make sci-fi movies about. I have never in my 50 years on this Earth seen 6 to 10 inches of snowfall in a matter of hours happen in South East Texas like I did this past week starting on February 15th.

INTERVIEW WITH GOVERNOR ABBOTT BELOW

ANOTHER NIGHTMARE COMES TRUE

On the morning of February 15th in Southeast Texas the predicted winter storms started blowing through and the temperatures quickly got as low as 14 degrees with a four degree wind chill factor. This created havoc at which time the unthinkable happened.

A friend of mine taught me a long time ago to “Never Say Never.” That was one of the most important things I’ve ever learned in my life, but sadly I’ve learned it the hard way.

THE UNTHINKABLE ACTIONS OF ERCOT

On the morning of  February 15th , 2021, with no warning the people that run ERCOT ( the Electric Reliability Council of Texas which controls 90% of the Texas power grid) turned off the electricity to all of our homes in SE Texas leaving us to deal with the bitter winter storm with no heat for days and days.  ERCOT had just announced a few days before this storm hit that they were fully prepared for the upcoming winter storm and they had plenty of energy on standby.

Me and my fellow Texans suffered badly because of these decisions. A lot of people died and there are a lot of people still in the hospital. There was complete devastation and havoc in Southeast Texas due to poor management & poor decision-making by the people at ERCOT. ERCOT jeopardized the health and well being of millions of people and should be held accountable NOW!

HEY ERCOT, HOW COULD YOU TURN OFF THE ELECTRICITY WITH NO WARNING AND LEAVE US TO FREEZE AND BE MISERABLE?

I am lucky, my life was spared but others weren’t so lucky. I don’t have to imagine how they felt because I was in hypothermia myself.  For those that have never been through an incident like this I will describe how it felt the best way that I know how. Wait until it gets cold in your area (below 20 degrees) and then go and live outside for 8 to 10 straight hours with only a blanket and as many clothes as you can put on.  Imagine that with no way to warm up!!

That is the only way to describe the misery that myself and millions of other people have felt this past week in SE Texas due to the incompetence of ERCOT.

This week’s winter storm, by the numbers:

  • The Coldest recorded temperature this week: 13 degrees on Feb. 16
  • The Longest stretch of freezing temperatures: 44 consecutive hours from 6:53 p.m. Sunday to 1:53 p.m. Tuesday
  • Number of consecutive days that it was 45 degrees or colder: 8 (longest stretch since January 1940)
  • Usual average temperature on Feb. 15 in SE Texas: 56.4
  • Average temperature Feb, 15, 2021: 20.5 (difference of 35.9 degrees)
  • Deaths blamed for extreme cold across the U.S.: 69 Texas: 21 so far
  • Power outages reported during the storm’s peak: About 4.3 million
  • Percentage of Texas’ power grid operated by ERCOT: 90%
  • Cost of damage from the  freeze: $18 billion (Current Estimation)
  • Number of people in Texas reporting outages during storm : 14.9 million
  • How Much of Texas Power grid is controlled by ERCOT  : 90%

These people should have charges filed against them for allowing this to happen. They let people die and suffer and gave absolutely no warning that it was happening until it happened.  Right now there are lawsuits being filed and I applaud all of these  people that have filed.

There are multiple victims  in Galveston Texas that have died from  weather related deaths.   These people died because of bad management and bad decision-making by ERCOT.

This is flat out murder and there is no excuse for what  just happened.  We were all victims of ERCOT and the incompetent people in charge of our power grid here in the great state of Texas

THE AFTERMATH

It is now 6 days later on Saturday February 20th and the aftermath just continues. We have just made it through our fifth consecutive day of below freezing weather and it is now 61 degrees. I fear the number of dead will climb as we defrost and see the reality of what has just happened to our elderly and most vulnerable.

Governor Abbott has done all he can to try to provide resources to help everybody but even he is stunned that this just happened to his state. He has asked the federal government for help but we haven’t seen much from the federal government.  The next few days will say a lot about who will be held responsible for this tragedy.

Change will be welcomed as  they are currently attempting to pass the laws that will change the way the power companies disperse energy to its customers in Texas.

This is an ongoing story that has really just began..
